Sworn translation of a birth certificate

A sworn translation of a birth certificate is a common requirement for many legal, immigration and administrative procedures both in Spain and abroad. At iDISC, we work with sworn translators-interpreters appointed by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation (MAEC), whose translations are officially valid before public administrations, universities, notaries, consulates and international organizations.

A birth certificate is an essential document that certifies the identity of a person from birth. It includes key information such as the person’s full name, date and place of birth, and parents’ names. In Spain, a birth certificate is issued by the Civil Registry corresponding to the place where the birth was registered.

This document is usually required for personal, academic, immigration and civil status procedures.

Our sworn translations ensure that this document retains its validity and accuracy when you need to submit it to institutions and authorities in another language, guaranteeing that all relevant information is correctly reflected.

What is a sworn translation of a birth certificate?

A sworn translation is carried out by a sworn translator-interpreter authorized by the MAEC, who certifies the accuracy of the content by means of their signature, official seal and mandatory certification formula.

This type of translation has legal validity and is required by public administrations and official bodies when the original document is written in a language other than the one required by the procedure.

When do you need a sworn translation of your birth certificate?

Among the most common procedures for which a sworn translation is required are the following:

  • Immigration processes: applications for visas, residence permits or immigration case files.

  • Acquisition or recovery of nationality: both Spanish nationality and that of other countries.

  • Studies abroad: enrollment and recognition and evaluation of academic qualifications.

  • Civil or religious marriage: especially when one of the parties is a foreign national or when the marriage is registered outside Spain.

  • International adoption processes.

  • Various consular procedures.

A sworn translation ensures that the document can be submitted to institutions requiring accuracy, fidelity and official certification.

Apostille and legalization

When submitting a sworn translation of a birth certificate and certain other documents abroad, some countries require an additional apostille or legalization. An apostille validates the authenticity of public documents, such as birth certificates, for use in countries that are party to the Hague Convention.

At iDISC, we can guide you through the steps to follow to ensure that your translation complies with all legal requirements. If you need an apostille, you should contact the issuing authority of the document in question. For example, in Spain, they can be apostilled at Notarial Associations or at the Territorial Offices of the Ministry of Justice, depending on the type of signature of the document.

Of course, at iDISC we also offer the sworn translation of your apostille, if required for your procedure.
