Sworn translation of a certificate of census registration

A sworn translation of a census certificate is a common requirement for legal, administrative, academic and immigration procedures both in Spain and abroad. At iDISC, all of our sworn translations are carried out by sworn translators-interpreters appointed by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation (MAEC), ensuring their official validity before public institutions, embassies, universities, companies and international organizations.

This type of translation is called sworn translation, official translation or certified translation, and is mandatory whenever the certificate is to be submitted in a language other than the original.

What is the census registration certificate?

The Certificate of Census Registration is a document issued by the town hall of the municipality where a person resides. It officially certifies your current address, length of residence in the municipality, household composition (in case of residence certificates or historical records) and other details depending on the type of certificate requested.

It is an essential document to prove residency in procedures before public administrations, judicial proceedings, educational applications, social programs and international formalities.

When do you need a sworn translation of the census certificate?

The sworn translation of this document is necessary in many situations, including:

  • Immigration or international mobility procedures: countries requiring proof of residence for visas, work or study permits, family reunification or naturalization.
  • Marriage abroad or consular registrations: some authorities require proof of residence by means of a sworn translation of the certificate.
  • Judicial or administrative proceedings: especially in cases requiring proof of address such as child custody matters, civil proceedings, inheritance or succession procedures.
  • Studies abroad: educational institutions may request it to confirm residency and determine eligibility requirements or fees.
  • Submission in Spain of a census registration certificate issued in another country: in these cases, a sworn translation into Spanish is required.

Apostille and legalization

Depending on the country where the translated certificate is submitted, the original document may require one of the following:

  • Hague Apostille (for member countries of the Convention).

  • Consular legalization (for non-member countries).

The apostille is affixed to the original document, never to the translation. If the certificate is already apostilled, we can also take care of the sworn translation of the apostille if required. In Spain, municipal certificates are generally apostilled through Notarial Associations, once the signature of the issuing official has been verified. If you need guidance, we can explain the appropriate steps depending on your case.
