Description
Sworn translation of an academic transcript
A sworn translation of an academic transcript is an essential requirement for many educational, professional and immigration procedures both in Spain and abroad.
At iDISC, this service is carried out by sworn translators-interpreters appointed by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation (MAEC), which guarantees that the translation has full official validity before universities, educational authorities, public administrations, companies and international organizations.
This type of translation is called sworn translation, official translation or certified translation.
What is an academic transcript?
An academic transcript is an official document issued by an educational institution that details the subjects taken, grades obtained, credits passed, academic level or program, and, in some cases, the overall grade point average or class rank.
In Spain, it may be accompanied by the European Diploma Supplement (EDS), academic certificates, grade certificates, or official resolutions regarding credit recognition or equivalency.
This document is essential for admission to higher education, degree recognition, scholarship applications, and for demonstrating academic qualifications in employment-related processes.
When do you need a sworn translation of your academic transcript?
Sworn translation is required in a wide variety of situations:
- Studies abroad: universities and academic institutions require the official translation of the transcript for admissions, international mobility programs, credit equivalencies and academic transfers.
- Degree recognition, equivalency, or validation: both in Spain and in other countries, educational authorities require a sworn translation of transcripts issued in another language.
- Immigration procedures: when applying for student visas, skilled work permits or residency processes, a translation of the transcript is frequently requested.
- Employment opportunities: international companies or public entities may request a sworn translation to verify the candidate’s academic background.
- Submission in Spain of foreign academic transcripts: for procedures with universities, professional associations, civil service examinations or public entities, the transcript must be accompanied by a sworn translation into Spanish.
Apostille and legalization
Depending on the country where you need to submit the translated academic transcript, the original document may need to be either apostilled or legalized. A Hague Apostille would be required if the destination country is a party to the Convention, or consular legalization is necessary if it is not.
The apostille is affixed to the original academic document, never to the translation. If the file has already been apostilled, we can also provide a sworn translation of the apostille. Transcripts are normally apostilled in the country where they were issued, through the corresponding educational or legal authority. We can advise you on how to proceed depending on the country and the procedure required.

At iDISC, our commitment is to offer the highest quality sworn translations, performed by sworn translators with extensive experience and knowledge of educational and legal procedures. Each translation is guaranteed to meet all accuracy and formality requirements, ensuring that it is accepted by the relevant institutions. We strive to deliver clear, accurate translations that retain the legal validity of the original document, thus facilitating any academic or immigration procedures you may need to carry out.
